WYK Homecoming Concert was first launched last year with great success. The objective of the event was to enhance the bonding and interaction between the old boys and existing students of WYK, as well as to offer an opportunity for many of the old boys to showcase the musical talents of “Wah Yan Boys” at our mother school. This year, the PSA has endorsed the idea of organising such a meaningful event again.

The Organising Committee, which comprises representatives from WYK, WYKPA, and WYKPSA, has been formed. The following is an overview of our ideas about the concert:

• The concert will be held in the evening of 5 September 2009 at the school hall of Wah Yan College, Kowloon.
• As many of you are aware, September 2009 marks the beginning of the 85th anniversary of WYK. It has been agreed that the concert will be designated as a celebrating event of the PSA for such an important year.
• The theme of the concert will centre on the music of WYK over the past 85 years. As such, the performance undertaken this year would be a collection of genres which display our music tradition over our past golden period.

While the details of the concert programme are being worked on, the possible performances include:

1. String instruments/ orchestra performance undertaken by the old boys and the existing students.
2. Choir-singing undertaken by the WYK Old Boys (possibly including a mixed choir performance with our long-timed partners) and the existing school choir.
3. Quartets or quintets (including instrumental and choral)
4. Western Art Songs
5. Chinese Orchestra
6. Chinese Art Songs and Chinese Operas
7. Band music/ folk songs (unplugged)
8. Other combinations

The details of the programmes certainly will require further development and the Organising Committee will provide you further update in the coming weeks. Obviously the content of the programmes depends heavily on the level of participation from our old boys. Therefore, the Organising Committee would like to take this opportunity to sincerely invite our PSA members who are interested in joining as performers to show their interest, particularly for (but not limited to) those who are former school orchestra members, choir members and active musicians during their school days. For those of you who are interested, please as soon as possible (but in any event no later than 3 July 2009) contact our Mike Cheng (86) for choir performances and Ken Luk (99) for instrument performances, or any one of them for other performances.

Folk music had been the prevailing music in the 70-80’s, when many Wahyanites have enjoyed the acoustic sound and collaboration with fellow schoolmates. To rekindle the culture of traditional music in the two Wah Yan and among alumni and friends of Wah Yan, the Foundation will jointly organise a Folk Music Gala with the Past Students’ Associations of Wah Yan Hong Kong and Wah Yan Kowloon on 30 August 2009. This Gala, in the form of a Singing Contest, will draw many of our music lovers to showcase their talents again on stage.

Rules  All Wahyanites are eligible to take part. 30 entries are allowed for the Qualifying Round, of which 15 teams will be selected as finalists. Multiple entries allowed but each team must comprise at least one Wahyanite (maximum 7 people per team). The enrolment fee is HK$3,000 per team, including 10 admission tickets. Fee will be waived if the whole team comprises all current students of Wah Yan.
Trophies  There will be 4 winners - Champion, Runner up, Third and the Best Performing Group. They will be eligible to be invited to perform in the Night of Performing Arts on 10th July 2010. Other prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Ticket  Ticket now available at HK$100 and HK$200 each, until stock lasts.

Mrs. Ko Lee Tun Yung, the past teacher of Wah Yan College Kowloon, passed away at QE Hospital last Monday (22 June 2009) at the age of over 100. Fr. Alfred Deignan will officiate the Requiem Mass and the Ceremony scheduled for 6 July and 5 July 2009 respectively.

Our alma mater and WYKPSA are organising an Alumni-Student Mentorship Scheme for the Form 4 students (2008/09) (”Mentorship Scheme”).

The Mentorship Scheme aims to widen the horizons of the students through sharing of life experiences from alumni, and through career-related learning experiences coordinated or provided by alumni, so that the students would reflect upon their aspirations in study and career development in the context of diversified pathways to success in life.

A visit to the Lamma Power Station will be held by the Young Members’ Committee on 21 March 2009 (Saturday) and the details are as follow:

Assembly point: Causeway Bay (Exact location to be confirmed shortly before the visit). We will arrange the relevant transportation from Causeway Bay to the Lamma Power Station.

During the visit, we will have the chance to visit the central control room, turbine hall, boiler house, reservoir area and other facilities of the Lamma Power Station and have an undertanding on the management of Lamma Power Station. The maximum number of participants is 30.

The visit is free of charge. After the visit, we will have lunch at a restaurant near Ap Lei Chau.
